About

The back story…

Melissa Worthington, or just Mel, is a freelance photographer based in the Washington, DC area.  She earned her MFA in Design from Virginia Commonwealth University and her BA from Georgetown University, has exhibited her artwork nationally and is a Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Fellow.  She likes spending time time outside with her son and husband, rabble rousing, knitting, writing, eating dessert first and buying all the clean red lipstick.

Expertise

Documentary Family Sessions

Let’s design a shoot based on what you want to remember most about this moment in your family’s life 5, 10, 50 years down the line! It might be as ordinary as a toddler hosting a tea party or Sunday morning pancakes. Or it be as special as an adoption made official or a return home from military service. Family life is rich with memories all along the way (yes, even life with teens!) and no two shoots will ever look the same. Not sure what to do? I can give you a questionnaire that will help.

Personal Brand Photography

Every endeavor needs an image bank for social media! Whether you are looking for headshots and environmental portraits, photos for your website or a collection of photos that tell the story of your process or product, we can design a shoot that covers all of your bases.

Family Mini Sessions

Not into a big production right now? That’s OK, we can still update your family portrait in a casual, fun and artful way. We’ll meet outdoors for a 30 minute session, just be prepared to laugh and let the personalities shine through! Join a scheduled Family Picture Day in a set location or choose your own special location and time. Contact me for more!

Newborn Documentary

Welcoming someone new? Let’s get photos within those first couple weeks that capture this time like no other. Whether this baby is your first or the latest, every addition creates a new dynamic to remember. I will come to your home because your baby’s environment and clothing make the best “props” IMO. By the way, don’t stress the mess and you really don’t have to live in a mansion: this is not about your space but the love you give! Discounts apply for first year documentary projects: chose any 3 or all 5 ages from 2 weeks, 3 months, 6 months (sitting up), 9 months (crawling) and first birthday (cake smash!). As my own mom always says, “12 months, 12 faces”
